Few infections are as avoidable, or as damaging in the long term, as gum disease. At Total Family Dental Specialists, we provide patients with comprehensive periodontal care and have created this guide to help you proactively avoid gum disease and to identify signs of early gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease.
Brushing and Flossing
Regular at-home care is essential in avoiding the growth of gingival bacteria. Brushing twice a day, and after meals whenever possible, is essential to remove bacteria and plaque buildup that may develop over the course of the day.
Flossing is also important to clean hard-to-reach areas. When flossing, hold a one to two-inch portion of flossing thread between the thumb and forefinger of each hand, gently pressing it between the teeth. Once the thread is at the base of the tooth, curve it around the side and move it upward, changing the portion of thread after use.
Avoid Sugary or Acidic Foods
Oral bacteria break down sugars and increase the acidity of the mouth, eventually eroding tooth enamel and causing cavities, as well as infected gums.
To protect teeth and gums from acidic bacteria, avoid the consuming foods that are high in sugar or highly acidic. Maintaining a neutral pH balance in the mouth can help you with the long-term health of your gums and teeth, and will support long-lasting health for both your teeth and gums. This can be achieved by trimming back the consumption of sugary or acidic drinks like soda and fruit juices and in the consumption of foods such as asparagus and avocados.
Signs of Early Gum Disease
When preventing periodontal disease at home, being able to identify early symptoms of gingivitis can increase the success of treatment. Between dental visits, be sure to check your smile for:
- Bleeding Gums
- Sore or Tender Gums
- Inflammation or Changes in Gum Color
- Chronic Bad Breath
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact our periodontal specialists at Total Family Dental Specialists to schedule an appointment.
Visit the Dentist Regularly
Routine exams and cleanings are a necessity in maintaining proper gingival health. Exams can give you an idea of any special precautions you may need to make based on your personal and family medical histories, as well as any habits you may have that are detrimental to gum health, such as smoking. If you believe that you may already have gum disease, act quickly, as prolonged infection can lead to tooth loss, as well as permanent damage to the gums and bone that support your teeth.
Whether you believe you already suffer from gum disease or are looking to prevent periodontitis, contact our team at Total Family Dental Specialists today.
